The WannaCry ransomware attack is an ongoing worldwide cyberattack by the WannaCry ransomware cryptoworm. Targeting computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system and encrypting data to demand ransom payments.

Australians are strongly encouraged to update their Microsoft software… BEFORE opening emails and other programs, due to the virus possibly spreading via email attachments or websites.

This particular virus has features that allow it to look for other vulnerable systems once on your computer, giving it the ability to spread to other computers within a network.

We are also advised to back up our data onto a USB / disk that is external from any computers.

So far, this virus has reached 200,000 people in at least 150 countries.

It locks down computers and demands payment to restore access.

How to check if you need to update windows?

Generally, it will prompt you when a new software update becomes available. However, you can also take this step to check

  1. Select the start button, in the bottom left hand of the screen
  2. In the search bar, type “update” then select windows update
  3. Click “check for updates”
  4. Finally, if it says its up to date, your all good!
